First Filipino to win as Best Director in Cannes

Brillante “Dante” Mendoza won the Best Director award at in the Cannes Film Festival this year for his film “Kinatay” (Butchered).  He is the first Filipino to win as Best Director at Cannes.

Other nominees are no less than Quentin Tarantino, Ang Lee, Jane Campion among other celebrated film directors and filmmakers from different countries. The film Kinatay features cops torturing a prostitute who is accused of betrayal.  While Kinatay was praised by some critics, it also had negative response from other audience because of its level of violence.

Brillante Mendoza is also the director of Serbis which was as well an official entry for the Cannes last year.  It was starring Gina Pareño, Jaclyn Jose, and Coco Martin, the prince of Philippine independent films.

Mabuhay ang Pinoy! Being the first Filipino Best Director for Cannes Film Festival is a celebration of the whole Filipino people.

More reasons to celebrate, other than Pacquiao, and Charisse, and Arnel Pineda, and many others of course. 🙂
